A theoretical analysis of the systematic errors in the Red Clump distance to the LMC

چکیده
We present a detailed analysis of the uncertainty on the theoretical population corrections to the LMC Red Clump (RC) absolute magnitude, by employing a population synthesis algorithm to simulate theoretically the photometric and spectroscopic properties of RC stars, under various assumptions about the LMC Star Formation Rate (SFR) and Age Metallicity Relationship (AMR). A comparison of the outcome of our simulations with observations of evolved low-intermediate mass stars in the LMC allows one to select the combinations of SFR and AMR that bracket the real LMC star formation history, and to estimate the systematic error on the associated RC population corrections. The most accurate estimate of the LMC distance modulus from the RC method (adopting the OGLE-II reddening maps for the LMC) is obtained from the K-band magnitude, and provides (m − M)0,LMC = 18.47 ± 0.01(random) +0.05 −0.06(systematic). Distances obtained from the I-band, or from the multicolour RC technique which determines at the same time reddening and distance, both agree (albeit with a slightly larger error bar) with this value.

K-Band Red Clump Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud
The Hipparcos I-band calibration of horizontal-branch red clump giants as standard candles has lead to controversial results for the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). In an attempt to properly ascertain the corrections for interstellar extinction and clump age and metallicity, we analyze new multiwavelength luminosity functions of the LMC red clump. Our photometry dataset in the K-b...
متن کاملTheoretical expectations for clump red giants as distance indicators
Variations of ∼ 0.4 mag are expected in the I-band absolute magnitude of red clump giants, M I , as a function of both stellar age and metallicity. This regardless of some potential theoretical uncertainties. Due to the quite large differences in mean ages and metallicities of clump stars among galaxies, systematic changes (also amounting up to ∼ 0.4 mag) come out in their M I . These numbers a...
متن کاملA “Short” Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud With the Hipparcos Calibrated Red Clump Stars
Following an approach developed by Paczyński & Stanek, we derive a distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by comparing red clump stars from the Hipparcos catalog with the red clump stars observed in two fields in the LMC that were selected from the ongoing photometric survey of the Magellanic Clouds to lie in low extinction regions. The use of red clump stars allows a single step determin...
متن کاملThe Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Red Clump Stars as a Distance Indicator
We present calibration of the mean I-band brightness of red clump stars on metallic-ity. Red clump stars were proposed to be a very attractive standard candle for distance determination. The calibration is based on 218 nearby red giant stars whose high quality spectra allowed to determine accurate individual metal abundances. High quality par-allaxes (σπ/π < 10%) and photometry of these very br...
متن کاملThe Distance to the Lmc Cluster Ngc 1866 and the Surrounding Field
We use the Main Sequence stars in the LMC cluster NGC 1866 and of Red Clump stars in the local field to obtain two independent estimates of the LMC distance. We apply an empirical Main Sequence-fitting technique based on a large sample of subdwarfs with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes in order to estimate the cluster distance modulus, and the multicolor Red Clump method to derive distance and red...
